Supporting Broadband for local businesses and community organisations

Wellington Shire Council is keen to ensure that local businesses are able to maintain and boost their competitiveness in the market place by having the opportunity to take advantage of Broadband technology.

By Wellington Shire Council - 31st August 2004 - Back to News

Supporting a concerted drive by the Gippsland Area Consultative Committee (GACC) across the region, the council is encouraging business owners, along with community organisations, wishing to link up to Broadband to register their interest as soon as possible.

According to the GACC an increasing number of small businesses are suffering due to the lack of a high-speed, reliable, connection to the Internet, with reports of some being unable to communicate properly with their suppliers or buyers, or having difficulty with web-based marketing strategies. The committee says rapid action is needed to address the situation and demand in some Gippsland communities is now getting close to the point where Broadband connection would be economically viable.

Interested business owners and community representatives can obtain a fact sheet with details of how to register and other useful information on Broadband by telephoning the GACC on 5175 0600.

In addition the State Government’s Rural and Regional Services and Development Committee is conducting an inquiry into regional telecommunications infrastructure for business. Its discussion paper considers several broad topics largely concerning the provision of Broadband Internet services to regional areas. The focus is on the impact of Broadband provision on business opportunities.

Anyone who would like to make a submission is again encouraged to do so as soon as possible. For more information call the committee on 1300 787 202, or visit their website at www.parliament.vic.gov.au/rrsdc

Said Wellington Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "As a council we are anxious to ensure that Wellington businesses and community organisations are not left behind because they can’t get linked up to Broadband. If they wish to take advantage of this new technology they should have the opportunity to do so.

"It’s therefore important that those interested register their position. It doesn’t mean that they have to commit themselves to taking up the service. Also the Government inquiry provides a valuable avenue through which to voice opinion on the Broadband issue."
