Emerging artists to exhibit at Latrobe Regional Gallery

The exhibition ‘surfacing 04’ brings to the Latrobe Regional Gallery the works of emerging artists from around Australia, with the common theme of the investigation of surfaces in both texture and form.

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that a diverse range of art forms was represented in this exciting exhibition, from works on paper to site specific installation, painting and sculpture.

"The artists exhibiting insurfacing 04’ are Megan Doherty, from Victoria, Kath Hastings from Queensland, Cameron Shaw and Jill Wyers both from Victoria.

"The exhibition asks the viewer to consider the larger landscape that we appreciate from a distance. Quite often we ignore the intense sensuality of the surfaces that make up the broader landscape, from the clothing we wear, to the walls we sit in front of and the interior spaces we inhabit. How often have we taken the time to truly realise the smaller parts of the total sum of our daily existence?" Ms Tegart explained.

Ms Tegart said that the exhibition explored our second skin, the clothing we wear, and was designed to present our ‘outer self’ to the world.

"It looks at the facade we create to embellish our sometimes mundane existence as we transit through the daily grind.

"Artist Jill Wyers allows us to take the opportunity to stand back and truly appreciate the connection between self and environment. Her large scale installation made from chaff bags and fabric conjures up images of the hard working woman of the land who dreams of bigger and better things," Ms Tegart said.

"Our environment, the landscape we look out at every day, has a certain rhythm that both hums through our head yet allows us to be part of the space that surrounds us. How often do we admire from afar the intense patterning of the micro field?

"The paintings of Megan Doherty allow us to stand close to the land that surrounds us, yet investigate the layers of both paint and meaning. The subtle layering of surfaces allows the viewer to imagine the seasonal changes of existence," Ms Tegart explained.

"The broader experience of touching the earth and making some sense of the land we look at daily is seen in the works on paper of Kath Hastings and her experience of the urban world. Her work asks what becomes of the images we see as we park our cars in the greyness of the local supermarket.

"Rather than bypass the surfaces that lead us to fluoro interiors, Hastings has investigated the images that are present before us as we make our way out of, or into, the ‘shopping desire’. Through interpreting the blankness of the cement wall, via the unconscious markings of the inhabitants, we are able celebrate the exquisite markings that decorate an otherwise ignorable public domain," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Tegart added that the unusual installation by Cameron Shaw consisting of a cocoon made from sticky interventions is designed to prompt many questions.

"What does it hold? What does it protect? We often imagine the re-creation of our domestic space and worry about the corners that the domestic goddess avoids through other duties. Allow yourself to imagine what those spaces remind us of and consider the notion of domestic surface," Ms Tegart explained.

‘Surfacing 04’ runs to Sunday 16 January.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed on Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
