Local laws officers to round up unregistered pet owners

Latrobe City’s local laws officers will be commencing random street blitzes in the next few weeks to determine instances of unregistered pets in the community.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th April 2006 - Back to News

Owners of unregistered cats and dogs will be penalised $210 for each unregistered pet.

The blitz follows expiry of the registration deadline of 10 April, the annual date by which all cats and dogs aged three months or more must be registered with their local council.

Latrobe City’s manager local laws, Peter Fraser, said local laws officers will soon be targeting residential streets and localities at random, and checking each property to identify whether there are cats and dogs at the premises.

"We will be using the pet registration data to determine what pets are registered at each address in a street; and then checking to see if there are unregistered cats and dogs aged over three months at properties in the street. A similar blitz will be undertaken in rural and rural residential areas," Mr Fraser said.

"Our local laws officers can hear a ‘purr’ or a ‘woof’ at one-hundred metres, so if you have unregistered pets there’s a very good chance your own pets will give you away," Mr Fraser joked.

"Seriously though, it’s very important that our community embrace registration of their pets as being an integral part of pet ownership, and as such, everyone with a pet has a responsibility. It is also a state-wide requirement.

"By registering your pet you are ensuring its wellbeing and the wellbeing of other people and pets in the community; and also your own peace of mind, as registered pets are reunited with their owners quickly. Registration also means that pet owners can be notified of the outbreak of prevalent diseases or risks that may affect their pets, and of opportunities for microchipping or other advantageous aspects of pet care," Mr Fraser said.

"Where cats and dogs aged three months or more are found to be unregistered on a property, owners will face fines. They can avoid those fines by registering their pets with council before the local laws officer visits.

Anyone with unregistered pets can register them at council’s Moe, Morwell or Traralgon service centres during opening hours 8.30am – 5.15pm Monday to Friday. There will be no questions asked about why the animal has not been registered to date, or why the registration is late, providing this is done before the local laws officer calls," Mr Fraser added.
