Input Sought On Future Of Moe’S Moore Street Shared Zone

Latrobe City Council is seeking public input on the future of the ‘shared zone’ in Moore Street, Moe.

By Latrobe City Council - 14th November 2005 - Back to News

The shared zone in Moore Street lies between George Street and Albert Street and currently has a vehicle speed limit of 10 km/h. Pedestrians currently have right of way over vehicles anywhere within the designated area, and vehicles using the shared zone must be prepared to stop and wait for pedestrians to cross the street.

Latrobe City’s Manager Infrastructure Development, Brian Fitzgerald, said that the shared zone in Moore Street came into operation in 1992 following an extensive study into the operation of Moe’s CBD. "That study dealt with landscaping, traffic and parking, and pedestrian access and safety," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"During its period of operation since 1992, a number of concerns have been expressed by the public regarding the failure of motorists to observe the very low 10 km/h speed limit and the apparent lack of knowledge of the road rules governing shared zones," Mr Fitzgerald explained.

"As a consequence, Council has written to all businesses in Moore Street, the Moe Traders Association, and the Moe Development Group, as well as the emergency services, to determine their views on the issue. Council is keen to hear the views from people who use the Moore Street shared zone shopping precinct, either as pedestrians, cyclists or motorists.

"Some people may suggest a change to the speed limit, or having pedestrians cross only at certain points; having one-way traffic flow, or even restricting traffic to delivery vehicles only. The whole purpose of this call for input is to get opinion from the public at large," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"Following the receipt of opinion, Council will arrange a public meeting to discuss the views put forward and workshop options that may improve conditions for traders and shoppers," Mr Fitzgerald added.

Comments or suggestions may be lodged on line at www.latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au; sent to the Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 264, Morwell 3840; or by contacting the City’s Traffic Planner Ray Bright, telephone 1300 367 700.
