BCYC APPRECIATED - Last week the YMCA and Council hosted a lunch for members of the Bass Coast Youth Council (BCYC).

By Bass Coast Council - 21st December 2006 - Back to News

Representatives from both organisations joined members of the BCYC to celebrate the achievements of the past year.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said the lunch had been an opportunity to congratulate the members of the BCYC on an exceptional job.

"This year, the BCYC developed and launched its own logo," said Cr Goodwin.

"And they launched the Youth Privilege Card, which offered local young people discounts on goods and services.

"The response to the card was fantastic and the Youth Council members worked very hard on the project," continued Cr Goodwin.

Cr Goodwin said the members of BCYC could be very proud of the work they’ve done, including their role in organizing WaterFest 2007.

"The lunch was a chance to acknowledge and thank them for their work," said Cr Goodwin.

"It was also an opportunity to welcome the new Youth Council members for 2007."

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

Once again this year, Bass Coast Council’s Christmas Giving Tree has brought out the Christmas spirit.

Council’s Financial Hardship Officer, Bev Morphett said the response from the community and staff was really appreciated.

"I’d like to say a very big thank you to everyone who left gifts under the trees," said Ms Morphett.

"These gifts will certainly help bring some Christmas cheer to families in Bass Coast who are struggling this year."

The gifts will be distributed by the Combined Churches and Welfare Groups.

NYORA ST HELIERS ROAD FUNDING

The Federal Government has announced further Auslink strategic regional projects. This includes the Nyora-St Helier Road in the Bass Coast Shire.

Funding of $350,000 has been confirmed for the upgrade of the Nyora-St Helier Road. This is one of 11 Victorian projects confirmed for funding.

Work on the project is expected to commence in the first half of 2007.

DROUGHT personal support LINE – 1300 655 969

The Drought Personal Support Line begins operation on 22 December 2006, operating from 3pm to 11pm, 7 days a week (including public holidays).

It offers callers from rural communities affected by drought confidential support and information, as well as referral to other support services.

Experienced people who understand the impacts of drought on rural communities will answer calls on the line. People who call out of hours have the option of leaving contact details for the service to call them back. The service can stay in touch with people over a period of time if the callers think that is helpful.

Callers may ring to express their frustration or distress over the effects of drought, or they may be concerned about family members or friends. Others may only need a neutral ‘sounding board’ with whom they can discuss various issues.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Drought Information Line (Phone: 136 186) provides information and referral on a wide range of issues including: financial assistance, support for non-farm businesses, water information, on-farm assistance and personal support.

The DPI Drought Information Line can connect people through to the Drought Personal Support Line to talk over the effects of the drought.

FIRE FUNDRAISING BOOK

A fundraiser to support those affected by the Gippsland fires is currently being organized.

The project, supported by The LV Printers, will publish a book of photographic images of the 2006 Gippsland fires.

The full colour book will contain over 20 pages of images and profits from the book will be donated to the CFA and Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

Project organizer Ian Needham is currently searching for photos from the fires.

"If anyone has photos they would like to contribute to the book, we’d love to see them," said Mr Needham.

"So many people have digital cameras these days, so there are lots of photos around.

Mr Needham said the photos would need to be at a reasonable resolution so they reproduce properly.

"As a rule of thumb, photos of about 500kb or larger will reproduce quite well," said Mr Needham.

"If you do send a photo in, please make sure you include a caption, stating the time, date and location of the photo, as well as your name."

Anyone interested in contributing photos can contact Ian Needham on 0418 331 683. Photographs on CD or hard copy can be mailed to PO Box 2080, Traralgon VIC 3844, or emailed to npr@net-tech.com.au. Please ensure email attachments don’t exceed 2MB.

It is hoped the book will go on sale early in 2007
