From April Your Pet Must Be Microchipped – Discount Microchipping Available Next WeekVeterinary clinics in Latrobe City will be providing discounted microchipping next week- Monday 30 March to Sunday 5 April, just in time for the commencement of council’s new requirement for compulsory pet microchipping. By Latrobe City - 30th March 2009 - Back to News The discounted pet microchipping week is the last in a series of ‘special’ weeks designed to support animal owners in complying with new animal management requirements coming into effect in April.
Discounted microchipping costs $30 and an appointment can be made at the following participating veterinarians: Moe Veterinary Clinic, Lloyd Street, Moe, telephone 5127 3511; Old Sale Road Veterinary Services, Old Sale Road, Newborough, telephone 5127 4645; and Animal Clinic, Princes Highway, Morwell, telephone 5134 2868.
Latrobe City’s coordinator local laws, Peter Fraser said that dog and cat owners who have a pet older than three months of age, will as of this year, be required to provide proof of microchipping when registering their animal.
"Latrobe City Council recently sent animal registration renewal notices informing owners of the need to microchip cats and dogs.
"Residents who have already microchipped their animals and registered these details with council will not need to provide any further information.
"All they need to do to validate their pet registration, is check that the registration details are correct and make the required payment to council.
"Owners who have received a renewal notice with no tags will need to produce evidence that their dog or cat has been microchipped.
Mr Fraser said that owners who have not microchipped their pets will need to do so before being able to re-register their animal.
"If your pet or pets have not yet been microchipped, you will need to do so and then produce the microchip papers when making the re-registration payment.
"If your animals have been microchipped but you have lost or mislaid the microchip papers, your pet can be scanned at your vet or the council pound facility at Driffield Road Morwell, between the hours of 9am-9.30am or 4.30pm-5pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).
"Once scanned, you will then have access to the microchip number and all you need to do is present this number at the service centre. You will then be able to make your re-registration payment," Mr Fraser said.
"Once your pet’s microchip details have been recorded, they will be permanently added to your animals registration file."
Mr Fraser said that failing to take the appropriate action and leaving pets unregistered is not an option.
"There are substantial fines for failing to register your animal. Local laws officers will be following up on unregistered animals later in the year and issuing fines where necessary.
"Regardless of the legal requirement, a microchip provides a permanent form of identification which can quickly reunite owners with lost or injured pets. Microchips cannot be removed or fall off like a collar and tag.
"Microchipping not only identifies your pet for life, but it can save your pets life. Owners can then have the confidence that they will get their pet back if it is lost and ends up in the council pound or is injured and taken to a veterinary clinic," Mr Fraser added.
