A new mobile library was officially opened by the Governor of Victoria, John Landy A.C., M.B.E.

Many excited library patrons were present at the San Remo foreshore to witness the official opening.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Director of Community and Economic Development, Richard Perry, said the new mobile library featured all the "modcons" that today’s library users expect.

"Within the new, bright, colourful interior are two public Internet access stations, four new laptops, a circulation work desk, disabled access technology, and an expanded capacity to provide over 6000 items for loan to the public.

"The mobile library is also fully self sufficient when it comes to power. It has a remote controlled generator so there will be no disruptions to the service even when power supply is not available," informed Mr Perry.

The new mobile library, worth around $435,000, replaces two older trucks and trailers.

West Gippsland Regional Library Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, John Murrell, said the Library Corporation was extremely pleased with the new acquisition.

"We were very fortunate to be in a position to buy an existing Mobile Library trailer that was no longer required by the Mitchell Shire following the opening of their new library in Wallan.

"We have fully refurbished the trailer and have also purchased a new prime mover to pull it to the many towns visited by the mobile service.

As well as servicing the Bass Coast townships of Corinella, Coronet Bay, Grantville, Kilcunda and San Remo, the new Mobile Library will service a number of communities throughout the South Gippsland and Baw Baw Shires.
