National Reconciliation Week offers people across Australia the opportunity to focus on reconciliation, to hear about the culture and history of Australia’s Indigenous people, and to explore new and better ways of meeting challenges in their communities.

Cr White said Latrobe City recognised that the indigenous people of Latrobe City are the traditional occupants of the Braiakaulung country, as part of the Latrobe City Council Statement of Commitment to Indigenous People.

"In our City, we want to promote the understanding and respect of different cultures and backgrounds of people and groups in our municipality, and in society as a whole," Cr White said.

"Reconciliation is about people getting along together no matter who or where they come from. It is about understanding and respecting each other’s culture and background.

"Reconciliation has become a very understood and a respected term to describe the process of developing better relations between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As a result, a wide range of Australians are responding positively to reconciliation," Cr White said.

Cr White said that locally, the Latrobe City Council had recognised and acknowledged the Braiakaulung people by developing the Statement of Commitment which was adopted by Latrobe City Council in May 2000.

"This document was developed and produced on behalf of the people of Latrobe City Council, through a consultation process between the Braiakaulung Advisory Committee’s members from the Latrobe City Council Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, Latrobe City staff and Councillors," he explained.

"The statement has been recognised not only in the Latrobe Valley region, but councils across Victoria are also following our lead and adopting similar memorandums with their Indigenous community," Cr White said.

"Council continues to address the high indigenous unemployment rate, and not only in Latrobe City. Latrobe City is now setting the pace for other Councils in Victoria and has extended its contract with the Indigenous traineeship program to the whole of Gippsland. To date there have been over 30 traineeships established, which include building apprenticeships, administration, dental nursing and agriculture."

Cr White said all Latrobe citizens were urged to actively participate in the reconciliation process.

"It cannot work without the participation of individuals, communities, the business sector, non-government agencies and the whole Australian community," Cr White said.

"National Reconciliation Week is a time for us to renew our commitment to reconciliation and to think about how we can enhance future opportunities and build on that which has been achieved so far; and we can do this to some extent by participating in events such as this flag raising and the Reconciliation Barbecue next Thursday," Cr White added.
