Latrobe City presents Australia Day AwardsMr Darell Benjamin is Latrobe City’s ‘Citizen of the Year 2004’. The award was presented by Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, on Australia Day at the Civic Celebration held at Kernot Hall. By Latrobe City Council - 27th January 2004 - Back to News More than four-hundred citizens attended the afternoon celebration which included presentations to Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year and a Citizenship ceremony where twelve residents became Australian citizens.
Mr Benjamin was commended for his fund raising work in which he has raised $340,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital during the past 24 years, co-opting family, friends and the local fire brigades to collect on Good Fridays.
This year there were dual winners of the Young Citizen of the Year Award, with 17 year old Alysia Hunter presented with her award for her community work with local radio station, Gippsland FM, the Churchill Youth Action Centre, the Gippsland Youth Leadership Program and Youth Council; and 16 year old Brendan Yeates for his community work through dance, the Gippsland Youth Leadership Program and Youth Council.
Winner of the Community Event of the Year Award was the 48th Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod event conducted in Traralgon. President of the Eisteddfod Committee, Christine Medhurst accepted the award on behalf of the committee. The Eisteddfod has provided the opportunity for thousands of people to perform in areas such as music, theatrical dance, drama, speech, choral, bands, and instrumental.
Nineteen Latrobe City Australia Day awards were also presented by the Mayor, recognising contributions to the community.
Citizen awards were presented to Frank Bezzina, Colin Brick, Kathleen Carruthers, Joy Davis, Joan Gardner, Phillip Higgins, Phillip Mayer, Marie Moulton, Debra Thompson, and Deborah Zwierlein.
Young Citizen awards were presented to Scott Dwyer and Daniel Scholes.
Community Event awards were presented to the Boolarra Community Development Group, for the Boolarra Folk & Drums Festival 2003; The Yallourn North Historical Society, for Coalies Week; the Glengarry Community Progress Association, for the Great Victorian Bike Ride; the Traralgon Tennis Association Inc. for the Loy Yang Power International Tennis Federation Victorian Junior Championships; Twin City Archers Gippsland Inc. for the State Indoor Archery Championships; the Traralgon Golf Club, for the Traralgon PRO-AM Golf Tournament; and Club Astoria Morwell, for the Club Astoria Oktoberfest 2003.
