Latrobe residents embrace recycling

Three months after the introduction of a three-bin recycling and waste collection service, most Latrobe City residents have successfully adapted to the new initiative, according to Acting Manager Waste Services, Nick Francolino.

"We are generally very pleased with the way residents have co-operated with the introduction of the new recycling and waste collection service. We were prepared for some teething problems with contamination in the first few weeks, and that eventuated, but now the service is operating quite smoothly," Mr Francolino said.

"The new service provides a number of advantages. Previously, Latrobe residents needed to separate their paper and cardboard from their plastics and glass. Under the new ‘co-mingled’ system, all recyclable containers, newspapers and cardboard are placed together in the one bin.

"Green waste is now collected fortnightly instead of annually and taken to PineGro’s Green Waste Recycling Facility where it is manufactured into potting mixes, mulches and landscaping products," Mr Francolino said.

Mr Francolino said that contamination of recycling and green waste continued to be the number-one problem, but on a reduced scale. "Many Latrobe residents were surprised to learn that even small quantities of contamination in their recycling and green waste could cause major problems," Mr Francolino said.

"While contamination from items such as nappies, dog faeces and barbed wire has reduced dramatically following a cross-media promotional campaign in September, we are still experiencing some problems with people putting recyclable items in plastic bags."

Manager of DASMA Environmental Solutions, Neville Bond who managers the Materials Recycling Facility in Tramway Rd Morwell, said that due to health and safety concerns, staff at the plant were not able to open packages of recyclables wrapped in plastic bags.

"As we can’t see what’s inside the plastic bags, this material must be treated as garbage and sent to landfill. This is a big waste of everyone’s time, energy and recyclables," Mr Bond said.

"We ask residents to place all recycling items loosely in their recycling bin and remember that only items listed in the information brochure can be recycled."

Mr Bond said that in the past month, the quality of recyclable material coming into the facility had improved markedly, with approximately 700 tonnes of glass, plastics and paper being processed for further recycling.

Manager of PineGro Morwell, Keith Tomholt said over 2,800 tonnes of green waste had been received since 1 July. Most of this was received through the kerbside collection.

"The main problem we are having is that some people are putting their grass, weeds and prunings into plastic bags before placing it in the green waste bin. Please ensure the contents of your green waste bin is free of any plastic bags," Mr Tomholt said.

Mr Francolino added that there also been changes for those wanting to dispose of green waste by the trailer load. "Green waste other than that placed in green waste bins as part of the waste collection service, must now be taken to one of the PineGro facilities, in Rocla Road, Traralgon; Della Torre Road, Moe; or Monash Way, Morwell. Green waste is no longer accepted at Latrobe City Transfer Stations," Mr Francolino said.

Those residents who are still unsure of what can be recycled in Latrobe can find all the information they need on the Latrobe City website at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au under ‘Recycling and Waste Collection Service’. Alternatively residents can phone Citizen’s Services on 1300 367 700 and ask to speak to the Waste Education Officer.
