Netball club facilities upgraded through grants program

Netballers with the Newborough Football Netball Club have enjoyed new changing room facilities since the season began in April. The rooms, built with a Latrobe City Council Community Grant, were constructed during the off season.

Cathy Risol, President of the Netball Club, said that after years of planning it is great to see the new building completed and being enjoyed by all of the Newborough netballers.

"It was a really satisfying experience seeing the building develop. From the initial brickwork and the roof going on shortly after that, there was a sense of ownership and the realisation that we were finally well on the way to creating a much needed facility," Cathy explained.

"After the plumbing for the toilets was installed we finally had the new and more accessible changing rooms to use for the season. Previously, the players had to change in a hut and then go across to the clubrooms to use the toilet facilities there, but with 120 women playing every second weekend, this was proving to be very inconvenient," Cathy said.

"An extended undercover verandah has also been built so that the supporters and visitors have somewhere dry to stand whilst matches are being played in inclement weather," Cathy added.

As with many projects supported by Latrobe City’s Community Grants, the club members, players and committee alike, did a lot of the work.

"We have practically built the changing rooms ourselves. We are lucky to have members involved with the club who are also plumbers, carpenters and electricians so the labour aspect has been done on a volunteer basis, while the grants funding was used to buy the materials needed," Cathy said.

Development Officer, Peter Risol, said another aspect of the Community Grant was to fund the construction of a retaining wall next to the netball courts. "The dirt and gravel being knocked onto the court was a safety hazard, and by building the wall we were able to prevent the continued erosion of the soil that was causing the dirt to fall onto the courts," Peter explained.

"Like previous seasons, we will be doing fundraising to cover the outstanding costs of these projects. However, had we not found out about the Community Grants program, these projects would still be at the planning stage, with a long way to go before completion. It’s great that we were able to construct the buildings in time for the coming season. The players have certainly benefited from having an all-in-one changing room and toilet facility," Peter concluded.

Latrobe City Councillor Tony Zimora urged all clubs and community groups to take advantage of the Community Grants scheme.

"The program covers minor capital works grants for building or refurbishment projects, funding for community development work such as newsletters or access for people with disabilities and also provides grants to help develop or improve community events.

"Whatever your organisation is planning, it is worth looking into the Community Grants scheme to see if you qualify for funding," Cr Zimora concluded.

Applications from community groups, for grants to be made under Latrobe City’s 2004/2005 Community Grants Program are currently invited. The deadline for receiving applications is 5pm on Friday 17 September 2004.

Application forms are available from Council’s Citizen Service Centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, by telephoning 1300 367 700 or accessing the City’s webpage, www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
