Family Day Care gains accreditation for the second timeLatrobe City’s Family Day Care workers are celebrating after successfully meeting the National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC) standards for accreditation for the second time. By Latrobe City Council - 12th December 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that the NCAC was a government-funded service with the responsibility to assess each childcare centre, family day care service and out of school hours care service to ensure that they are providing childcare to a nationally recognised standard.
"By gaining accreditation for the second time, Latrobe City is leading the way in demonstrating the quality service that the family day care unit provides," Cr Price said.
Latrobe City’s manager family services, David Welch, said that the accreditation process looked at six quality elements within the service provided. These elements were interaction; physical environment; children’s experiences, learning and development; health, hygiene, nutrition, safety and wellbeing; carers and co-ordination unit staff; and management and administration," Mr Welch explained.
"For example, a validator may check that the communication between the care-provider and the family is both effective and supportive of the child. They may check that a care-provider’s home meets child safety requirements and that there are age-appropriate toys and activities to engage the children in care, as well as supply nutritious meals and drinks. The administration of the scheme is also checked to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, or that procedures are clearly defined," Mr Welch added.
"This time around, the lengthy process of accreditation began in April with a self-study completed by the family day care service. From June, surveys were sent to the co-ordination unit staff, 40% of families who use the service (around 350 families), 40% of school-aged students using the service and the care-providers themselves.
"In mid-July, a validator from the NCAC came down and assessed the family day care service for 5 days. During this time, the validator visited nine care-providers, selected at random by the NCAC, for around 3 hours each. The validator also spent time with the co-ordination unit, going through policies and other information, as well as visiting one of the three playgroups that are facilitated by a member of the co-ordination unit," Mr Welch said.
Cr Price added that the accreditation process was undertaken every two to three years and was first implemented in 2001.
"Latrobe City was one of the first schemes to go through the process. After receiving feedback from schemes the process was changed slightly and the second round commenced in January 2005.
"Once again, Latrobe is one of the first schemes to participate and pass accreditation. We are delighted that Latrobe City’s family day care service has met this high standard of care for the second time. It is important that families in Latrobe City should have access to quality child-care services, and by achieving the accreditation, we have more than validated the efforts of those involved in providing this home-based care," Cr Price explained.
"Both care-providers and the office-based support staff should feel extremely proud of their achievement," Cr Price concluded.
Latrobe City provides family day care to families within the municipality by home-based care-providers offering care seven days a week.
