Latrobe Valley throws weight behind new Centre

The newly established Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technologies Pty Ltd (CEGT), which opened just three months ago, has already received funding interest for nine projects from individuals and organisations within the Latrobe Valley.

CEGT Managing Director Mr Jan Dekker said the level of interest from within the Latrobe Valley was extremely encouraging given the Centre’s aim to support local development.

"It demonstrates the importance of being involved in research and development opportunities that promote best practice technologies in the generation and use of energy and the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions,’’ Mr Dekker said.

The centre’s original 40 funding applications had since grown to 74 applications and expressions of interest from individuals and organisations across Victoria. The applications include proposals to develop a range of technologies from new wind and biomass generators to higher efficiency motors.

‘’The Centre was established to support the development and trial of innovative, leading-edge technologies and we are very excited about the quality of applications we have already seen,’’ Mr Dekker added.

Local support for the Centre has already been committed from Latrobe City, Monash University, Gippsland Water and the Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre. In addition, a number of other entities have indicated future support for the Centre.

‘’Additionally, there are substantial brown coal technology efficiency and Greenhouse gas abatement wins possible and the Centre looks forward to working with the Latrobe Valley generators to continue developing relevant, viable technologies,’’ said Mr Dekker.

The Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technologies was established by the Victorian State Government in June to provide support for targeted research, development and commercialisation of energy supply, energy use and greenhouse abatement technologies and processes. The centre also facilitates the assessment and promulgation of best practice in these areas.
