Open Gardens October growing roots in Latrobe City

Are you looking for inspiration and ideas on how to grow your own fruit and vegetables this spring?

By Latrobe City - 10th October 2013 - Back to News

Then you should make the most of Open Gardens October and visit a participating local school or community vegetable garden.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that it is a great opportunity to see and learn more about the gardens our schools and community groups have created together.

"You may even pick up a few new tips and tricks to help grow your own vegetables. The open gardens scheme is a great way to get people out and about, thinking about local food sources and enjoying healthy, nutritious food." Cr Kam said.

Open Gardens October is an initiative of Healthy Together Latrobe (HTL), and encourages the public to become involved with their local school or community vegetable garden.

HTL is a partnership between Latrobe City Council, Latrobe Community Health Service, and the Victorian Government.

"Being part of a school or community vegetable garden is a great way to learn new skills from other more experienced gardeners, by becoming a volunteer or member." said Ms Christina Rush, Manager Primary Prevention with Latrobe Community Health Service.

It’s great to see that a number of schools and community organisations such as Neighbourhood Houses have already signed up to participate in the month-long initiative. There are many people already getting excited about growing, harvesting and preparing fresh food in Latrobe" Ms Rush concluded.

The following schools and community organisations have registered, but there may also be others involved.
