Traralgon outdoor pool to receive major upgrade

A major upgrade to the Traralgon Outdoor Pool is being undertaken prior to the summer swimming season

By Latrobe City Council - 26th September 2003 - Back to News

A major upgrade to the Traralgon Outdoor Pool is being undertaken prior to the summer swimming season, which will see the Olympic sized pool upgraded to a state-of-the-art sports and recreational facility, and the toddler’s pool refurbished to an exciting and inviting fun place for young people in the hot weather.

Manager Leisure Facilities, Tony Oulton, said the $320,000 upgrade is being undertaken through a Council contribution of $170,000 and a Sport & Recreation Victoria Better Pools funding grant of $150,000.

"This is the biggest upgrade to the Traralgon facility in forty-six years and involves creating a new shell to line the existing pool and incorporating a wet deck into the design that provides for better accessibility, increased safety and better water filtration," Mr Oulton said.

Mr Oulton said the refurbishment would also create a number of benefits for competition swimming.

"The depth of the pool at the shallow end will be increased from 0.9metres to 1.1 metres. This will assist swimmers in their tumble-turns and improve safety," Mr Oulton said.

"The Traralgon pool will also increase its potential as a competition pool with the incorporation of the new wet deck design. Water wash-back which is a disadvantage for those swimming in the outside lanes will be negated, as the water will now flow directly into the wet deck," he explained.

The refurbishment involves sand-blasting all floor and wall areas and repairing all cracks and deformations in the pool floor and walls, before recoating them with a process call fibre glazing.

"The entire pool will be reconfigured from the present scum gutter style pool to a wet deck style and the steel ladders will become a thing of the past, being replaced with fully moulded fibreglass inserts eliminating the potential hazards of the ladders," Mr Oulton explained.

As part of the outdoor pool refurbishment, the water slide is being removed. "Safety and design standards for these types of ancillary facilities have changed so much since the water-slide was installed that it simply doesn’t meet today’s safety requirements," Mr Oulton said.

"We have investigated whether the design could be modified to accommodate the necessary safety requirements, but unfortunately it cannot be done."

Cr Sheridan Bond said young children will be excited by the refurbishment of the toddlers pool. "This is going to be a major attraction for the very young, based on an imaginative design with artificial rocks and water features such as fountains where children can splash and play," Cr Bond said.

Cr Peter Tyler said the toddler pool will be fitted with its own filtration system, removing it from the present single system that supplies both pools. "In effect this means there will be better control of the pool chemistry, providing state-of-the-art water conditions in the toddlers’ pool, as well as in the Olympic pool," Cr Tyler said.

Mr Oulton pointed to a number of maintenance benefits arising out of the refurbishment. "Water loss is common in pools that were constructed to the standards of almost half a century ago, but the refurbishment guarantees there will now no longer be water wasted through leakage. That’s good for the environment," he said

"Periodical repainting of the pool interior will also be drastically reduced, and the new wet deck system will allow for the re levelling of the pool structure due to any movement that may have occurred over the past 46 years," he added.

Cr Lisa Proctor said the pool refurbishments would deliver a facility that a significant sector of the community could enjoy. "Apart from the physical upgrading of the facility, Council is also introducing a number of initiatives to encourage pool use this summer. Council has removed the minimum temperature opening trigger, and as a result, pools will be open every day except for days of inclement weather. The pools will also operate extended hours into the evening on hotter days," Cr Proctor said.

"As a consequence we believe we are delivering a higher level of service and standard of facility for the community’s outdoor recreational needs, and I’d like to congratulate Tony Oulton and his team on the work they have put in to delivering this result," Cr Proctor added.
