Dragon to fire up spectacular Chinese Festival

The highlight of the spectacle will be the dragon procession accompanied by a full entourage of lions, lion dancers and musicians. Dragons and lions are celebrated symbols in Chinese culture and the lively, colourful dragon dance has become a worldwide feature of Chinese festivities.

Latrobe City’s senior economic development officer, Leo Billington, said the Chinese festival recognises Latrobe City’s sister city relationship with Taizhou as well as bringing to Latrobe City some of the fabulous Chinese cultural elements that have become so recognisable across the world.

"As well as the dragon performance, there are activities planned that are associated with the forthcoming table tennis team visit to the City of Taizhou as part of this year's sister-city sporting cultural exchanges. A junior table tennis team will represent Latrobe City in a series of games to be held in Taizhou during May," Mr Billington explained.

The dragon performance starts in the Kay Street gardens at 10.30am outside Latrobe City’s civic centre, and will wind its way towards Stockland Traralgon.

There will also be Chinese lantern making and table tennis activities in front of Stockland Traralgon’s main entrance, as well as the regular Kay Street market. "The whole morning will be very family friendly," Mr Billington added.

"This Festival will introduce an easily recognisable, extremely vibrant aspect of Chinese culture to Latrobe City and we hope that residents will enjoy the spectacle," Mr Billington concluded.
