Latrobe City Welcomes Extension To Bushfire Rebuild Permits

A recent announcement from the Victorian Government to allow landowners whose property was destroyed during the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 to remain in temporary accommodation has been welcomed by Latrobe City Council.

Affected landowners will now have until the end of September 2017 to submit their site plan to council.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Dale Harriman, said that Latrobe City Council, along with other Victorian local government authorities, had written to the state government in April to request an extension.

"We are aware of many people in our region that lost their properties during those terrible fires and have not yet been able to rebuild. These people are living in temporary accommodation. Many of them are still too traumatised to begin the arduous journey of planning and building. This extension is breathing space for them," Cr Harriman said.

"Since the Royal Commission into the fires of 2009 planning and construction standards for rebuilding homes in bushfire zones has been stringent. This is clearly aimed at reducing the risk of a similar disaster occurring again on a wide scale. However, the burden on the property owner to fund and adhere to the requirements is now more onerous. Having more time to get it right means that those landowners who find themselves yet to rebuild get to plan for their homes without the pressure of a looming deadline," Cr Harriman concluded.
