Anzac study tour

The local MP sat down with Samantha and Sale College principal Brendan Staple, gaining insight into the Gippsland student's anticipated 11-day overseas study tour, to explore Australia's wartime and peacekeeping history.

The Spirit of Anzac Prize aims to connect young Victorians with the legend and spirit of Anzac, which symbolises the courage and sacrifice of Australian service people, as well as broaden the students' education and personal outlook through meetings with historians and veterans.

Honouring Anzac legacy

Mr Chester said, "Understanding the story of the ANZACs helps young Australians appreciate the values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice that helped shape our nation. By learning about the sacrifices made during times of war, students gain a deeper understanding of the freedoms they enjoy today and the cost at which they were won.

"Educating students on Australia's defence force history in schools is not about glorifying war, but about teaching respect, remembrance and the importance of peace. Programs, like the Spirit of Anzac Prize, that engage students with Australia's military past help strengthen national pride and ensure that the lessons of history are never forgotten," Mr Chester said.

More than 500 students have been awarded the opportunity to travel to significant wartime destinations as part of the Spirit of Anzac Prize, which has been running for 20 years.
