state-of-the art competition standard artificial surfaces.

Representing Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty, Member for Morwell, Russell Northe officially opened the new courts during the Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior International tournament, an ITF world junior ranking event staged at the Centre.

"Over the last few years the Traralgon Tennis Association, in partnership with Tennis Australia, Latrobe City Council and the Victorian Government, have worked hard to attract and stage the big tournaments in the Gippsland area," Mr Northe said.

"The prestigious Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior International and last year’s Latrobe City International Pro Circuit event are part of a growing list of major tennis championships making their way to Traralgon each year.

"The Centre’s fantastic new $709,400 courts not only deliver a wider variety of international competition standard tennis surfaces, but a greater advantage for the area when it comes to attracting even more national and international tournaments.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen explained the positive outcomes that international standard events can bring to the region.

"These international events have a myriad of positive impacts on the region. There are the obvious impacts the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle and inspiring our youth towards excellence in achievement; but also the attraction of visitors and economic benefit to our local towns and businesses.

"The two international tournaments in the 2010/11 financial year resulted in excess of $3.5 million of economic impact to our region.

"We are looking forward to the new and improved surfaces attracting more competition to the city and region," Cr Vermeulen said.

The Centre’s 24 resurfaced courts include 14 plexicushion courts, eight plexipave courts and two synthetic clay courts.

"These fantastic new courts will also allow local clubs to host even more development programs and support players of all abilities; building on the Centre’s reputation as a major regional tennis hub for everyone to enjoy," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe said the Victorian Government was proud to have provided $400,000 towards the court redevelopment as part of its recent election commitments and a further $5,000 from the Significant Sporting Events Program towards the staging of this year’s Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior International and last year’s Latrobe City Tennis International Pro Circuit.

"Supporting major sporting initiatives like these provides a boost to the prospects of our future tennis champions, and provides inspiration for even more Victorians to hit the

courts, take up sports like tennis and lead more healthy and active lifestyles," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe commended the Traralgon Tennis Association for its $75,000, Tennis Australia for its $134,400 and the Latrobe City Council for its $100,000 contribution towards the new tennis courts.

"I encourage all Victorians to come along and enjoy international tennis at the new Traralgon Tennis Centre, starting with this year’s Loy Yang Power Traralgon Junior International" he said.
