Digital art comes to Latrobe Regional GalleryAs part of the ‘Artist in Residence’ Program, Latrobe Regional Gallery will host digital artist, Matt Gardiner, from 20 October until 23 November. By Latrobe City Council - 23rd October 2003 - Back to News Mr Gardiner’s work is primarily in the area of digital media, however he frequently combines this with his work in origami.
Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton, said that Latrobe Regional Gallery was delighted to be able to host Mr Gardiner’s work as it offers visitors the opportunity to see how technology and the art world interact with each other.
"Showcasing Mr Gardiner and his work will be an excellent experience for the Gallery and for the greater community. It will build a public awareness of new technology and its role in contemporary art practice.
"Mr Gardiner’s work combines many high-tech practices which have largely not been displayed at the gallery. His unusual combination of digital art and origami is a unique initiative," Mr Holton said.
Mr Gardiner has worked on many projects in the art and digital art industry with Arts Victoria, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne University, the City of Melbourne and Niagara Galleries. He is the director of Airstrip, a consultancy company on interactive design, animation, database driven websites and origami. He also lectures on interactive technology at the National School of Design’s Department of Multimedia and his work has been showcased in Melbourne, Brisbane and Bangkok.
Mr Gardiner said that he hoped to gain interest in his work from a larger audience via his residency at Latrobe Regional Gallery.
"For me the benefits of this residency are multifaceted. The proximity and relationships to the Gallery, Australian Paper, Monash University opens doors and space, materials and contacts which can be used for the further development of exhibitions and ideas," Mr Gardiner concluded.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
