Good Land Management Rewarded

Rural land owners in Bass Coast may now be eligible for the new Land Management Rebate Scheme

Rural land owners in Bass Coast may now be eligible for the new Land Management Rebate Scheme

Good land management practices will be rewarded under a newly revised land rebate scheme endorsed by Bass Coast Shire Council.

By Bass Coast - 24th August 2011 - Back to News

The Land Management Rebate Scheme offers financial incentives to rural property owners looking to enrich and improve their land. Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, said the revised scheme still paid a rebate but the way the rebate was calculated had changed. "The main difference between the old and new schemes is that rebates will be calculated using an amount per hectare method.

"Council will still be providing a rebate to rural landholders that apply, but the rebate amount will be calculated on the area of land they manage," explained Mr Smith. " The revised Scheme is more equitable because it directly relates to land area and not land value. This ensures that the rebates are an incentive to improve good land management practices."

The Land Management Rebate Scheme stipulates that the rebate is used for only good land management practices. This includes controlling weeds, planting locally indigenous vegetation; providing shelter for live stock and minimising soil erosion and salinity,

The new Scheme helps to implement the community vision Guiding Bass Coast Towards 2030, by helping to protect and enhance our natural assets. The new method of calculating the rebate ensures that the total rebate available to the rural community will not be less than the total amount provided in the 2011/2012 year. Mr Smith said this reinforced Council’s commitment to the rebate scheme.

"All property owners who are eligible for the rebate will be mailed information explaining the changes before the next round of applications, which are due in April 2012," Mr Smith said.
