Western Port Greenhouse Alliance Launched

State Government has officially launched the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance (WPGA), an alliance of Local Governments, including Bass Coast Shire Council, working towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the Western Port region.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th June 2005 - Back to News

The regional partnership has been formed between Bass Coast Shire Council, Cardinia Shire Council, City of Casey, Frankston City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.

Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, says he is excited about the potential of the alliance.

"The involvement of Local Government is essential in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and I congratulate all the municipalities involved for their investment in the program.

"This is a great example of Local Governments working in partnership in the interests of our environment.

The WPGA will focus on five key projects throughout the Western Port region including:

1. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture;

2. Offsetting Council and industry greenhouse gas emissions through planting trees;

3. Promoting and establishing energy efficient street lighting;

4. Reducing household greenhouse gas emissions through community education; and

5. Exploring the implications of climate change in the region and identifying adaptation options.

Mr Smith said that since its inception six months ago, the WPGA had also taken steps towards involving additional agencies, such as Landcare, Parks Victoria and educational institutions.

"I look forward to seeing all of these groups work together to address global warming issues," he said.

The project was launched by Member for Hastings Rosy Buchanan MP on behalf of State Government at Warneet Yacht Club.

State Government has provided over $200,000 in funding to establish the regional partnership.
