Bass Coast Wins State Risk Management Award (l-r) Glenda McMillan, Risk Management Coordinator, Cr John Gains, Mayor, Jenny Churchill, Arts and Leisure Coordinator Councillors and Council staff were delighted to hear that Bass Coast won the Civic Mutual Plus 2002 Liability Risk Management Excellence Award By Carol McCormack - 11th November 2002 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council was presented with the Civic Mutual Plus 2002 Liability Risk Management Excellence Award – Excellence by a Council, at the Muncipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) annual conference in Melbourne on Thursday 31 October.
Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, accepted the award from Civic Mutual Plus (CMP), the Liability Insurer of 77 of the 78 Victorian Councils.
According to the award’s sponsor, CMP Insurance, this is the first year the award has been made in Victoria.
"Bass Coast Shire Council won the award for its innovative community based risk management program," said Mr Ron Farrell, from CMP Insurance. "Bass Coast’s program demonstrates a commitment to excellent risk management practices, supporting volunteers and community safety."
Council developed this risk management program in 2000. It involves Council officers working closely with volunteer committees of management to ensure that community facilities, such as halls and reserves, are safe for all users. The program trains these volunteers to understand good risk management practices and implement them in overseeing the facilities.
The training program and manual that Bass Coast Shire Council developed as part of this program is now being used throughout Victoria by other councils, community groups, and industry groups such as the MAV and ourcommunity.com.
"We are absolutely delighted to receive this award," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.
Cr Gains said the program was developed in response to many public liability problems that are facing volunteer groups and committees across Australia.
"We wanted to ensure that local groups could deal with these issues and that subsequently community faciltiies remained well maintained and safe for the broader community," said Cr Gains.
"I would like to thank Council officers Glenda McMillan and Jenny Churchill in particular for their excellent efforts in developing and implementing the program," he said.
