„h The $70,000 project will identify improvement priorities and objectives for the city¡¦s 117 playgrounds

„h The Regional Growth Fund has delivered more than $400 million, generating well over $1.6 billion of total investment across almost 1500 projects.

The Victorian Coalition Government is investing $46,700 from the $1 billion Regional Growth Project to conduct a review of the existing Latrobe City Council Playground Strategy to adopt a more whole of park approach.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the new Play Space Strategy would consider accessibility, amenity, and aesthetic improvements to the city¡¦s parks as well as infrastructure maintenance.

¡§The project will identify improvement priorities and objectives for the city¡¦s 117 playgrounds and define a hierarchy of local, district and regional play spaces,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§It will recommend distances between play spaces, based on safe walking distances, and identify future regional play space locations and themes based on demographic data.

¡§It will provide a range of maintenance standards, recommend improvements to maintenance programs, and identify training and development opportunities for staff.

¡§Outside of Regional Park, Newman Park Traralgon, Morwell Town Common, and Apex Park Moe, there is a need for a detailed rationale for the structure of the city¡¦s parks.¡¨

Mr Northe said council had committed $23,300 towards the cost of the strategy and would engage a suitable consultant through a tender process to deliver the project. An internal project control group will be established to oversee the project¡¦s delivery.

The project will be delivered over the course of two years. A detailed project plan and project brief has been developed.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that improving parks, playgrounds and open spaces in Latrobe City would provide more opportunities for residents, families and visitors to get outside.

¡§If we are to encourage a healthier lifestyle, if we want people to get outdoors and walk, run, play or just enjoy the public open spaces that we have here in our municipality, we need to ensure that those open spaces are top quality. This funding will help us deliver a strategy that provides the best play spaces to our residents,¡¨ Cr Gibson said.

Mr Northe said the Victorian Coalition Government funding towards the $70,000 Latrobe City Open Space Strategy Stage 1 would be provided through the Regional Growth Fund to Latrobe City Council, which would contribute $23,300.

The St James community will also play a key role in a project steering committee and the development of the historical components of the project.

¡§The Regional Growth Fund is investing in community-led projects to strategically drive jobs, investment and innovation in rural and regional Victoria,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§Since it was established in 2011, the Regional Growth Fund has delivered more than $400 million, generating well over $1.6 billion of total investment across almost 1500 projects.¡¨

In Latrobe City, the Regional Growth Fund has invested $16.66 million to support 57 projects, leveraging $59.27 million in total investment. Those projects include:

„h $1,100,000 towards the $1,550,000 Moe Outdoor Pool Refurbishment project

„h $600,000 towards the $683,514 Gippsland Plains Rail Trail Traralgon - Glengarry project

„h $1,500,000 towards the $2,000,000 Growing Aerospace Manufacturing at Latrobe Regional Airport project

The Latrobe City Open Space Strategy Stage 1 project is expected to be completed in June 2016.
