Detox Your Home This Saturday

Latrobe City residents will have the opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials lurking in cupboards and in the garden shed at no charge this Saturday 29 August

By Latrobe City Council - 26th August 2009 - Back to News

At the 2009 ‘Detox your home’ mobile collection, to be held at the Morwell Transfer Station between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

The mobile collection, run by Latrobe City Council in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is designed to take materials that cannot be accepted at Latrobe City’s new permanent ‘Detox your home Collection Point’, which opened last year.

Latrobe City waste education officer, Peter Collins, said that while the permanent Detox facility was very well supported by the community, the annual mobile collection was still the only way for residents to safely and responsibly dispose of the more hazardous items such as pool chlorine, insecticides, herbicides, brake fluid, acids, solvents and oxidisers such as peroxide.

"The new permanent Detox facility is an excellent service for the residents of Latrobe, but is limited in the materials that can be accepted. Only paint, oil, fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent globes, motor oil, car batteries, household batteries and barbecue gas cylinders are accepted at this site.

"We encourage all residents to clean out their cupboards and take advantage of the 2009 mobile collection, which is able to take a much wider range of hazardous materials. All chemical materials apart from those used for commercial, industrial or agricultural purposes will be accepted. Asbestos, ammunition and flares will also not be accepted. Containers must be of 20 litres or less and empty containers are not accepted. For information or referral on disposal of non acceptable items, contact council on 1300 367 700.

Residents across the municipality should note that all future mobile collections will now take place only at the one centralised Latrobe location, the Morwell Transfer Station, home of the permanent facility.

Sustainability Victoria’s Chief Executive Officer, Anita Roper, said the free service can help householders minimise the danger of accidents and reduce the risk to the environment. "There is no doubt that leaving unwanted household chemicals around the home, garage and garden shed increases the risk of accidents. That is why we encourage people to take these materials to the collection sites.

"If products like paint and solvents end up in landfill or in our waterways they can cause significant environmental problems," Mrs Roper said.

For a full list of accepted products and further information, call Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700 or Sustainability Victoria’s Infoline on 1800 353 233, or visit www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au.
