Gippsland Water To Allow Exemptions For Watering Gardens

Gippsland Water has announced that customers currently under Stage Three Water Restrictions can now apply for an exemption to water their garden at the earlier time of 5pm to 7pm

By Gippsland Water - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

Currently under Stage Three Water Restrictions, customers must only use hand-held or manual dripper systems on gardens from 8pm to 10pm on Sundays and Wednesdays for odd-numbered houses, and on Saturdays and Tuesdays for even-numbered houses.

Gippsland Water’s Chief Executive Officer John Mitchell said, "Gippsland Water will allow customers to water their gardens from 5pm to 7pm on the specific watering days while it is still light, but only through an exemption.

"An exemption will make it easier for some customers, such as the elderly, who find it difficult to water their garden late at night. However, the standard watering time of 8pm to 10pm for watering gardens on those specific days still apply under Stage Three Water Restrictions," Mr Mitchell said.

Key restrictions that apply under Stage Three Water Restrictions are:

  • For garden beds only:
    • Hand-held or manual dripper systems can only be used between 6am to 8am and 8pm to 10pm twice a week*.
    • Automatic dripper systems can only be used between midnight to 4am twice a week*.
  • Watering lawns is banned.
  • Using an automatic or manual spray watering system is banned.
  • Water must not be used to clean any part of a vehicle other than its windows, mirrors and lights, and for spot-removing corrosive substances. Water must be from a bucket filled directly from a tap (and not from a hose). A commercial car wash is permitted under strict restrictions and requirements.
  • New pools and spas cannot be filled. An existing pool or spa can only be filled with a bucket filled directly from a tap. Filling an existing pool or spa of 2,000 litres or more requires approval from Gippsland Water.

*Odd numbered houses can water during the specific times on Sundays and Wednesdays. Even numbered houses can water during the specific times on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Properties with no number are considered even for the purpose of restriction compliance. All watering (by any method) is banned on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

All Gippsland Water customers in the following towns may apply for an exemption to water their garden from 5pm to 7pm on the specific watering days:

Briagolong, Buln Buln, Churchill, Cowwarr, Darnum, Drouin, Erica, Glengarry, Hazelwood North, Heyfield, Jumbuk, Mirboo North, Moe, Morwell. Neerim South, Newborough, Nilma, Noojee, Rawson, Rokeby, Rosedale, Sale, Toongabbie, Trafalgar, Traralgon, Traralgon South, Tyers, Warragul, Wurruk, Willow Grove, Yallourn North, Yarragon, and Yinnar.

Gippsland Water is actively pursuing reports of water restrictions breaches and will continue to conduct audits of properties that have water conservation plans in place. Action will be taken against customers found to be in breach of the water restrictions.

"Gippsland Water is urging the entire community to conserve water wherever possible and adhere to water restrictions guidelines. We will keep the community informed about water restrictions over the coming months, with Stage Three and Four Water Restrictions to remain in place until further notice," Mr Mitchell said.

Stage Four Water Restrictions currently apply to Gippsland Water customers in Boisdale, Boolarra, Coongulla, Glenmaggie, Maffra, Seaspray, Stratford and Thorpdale. Exemptions to water gardens from 5pm to 7pm on the specific watering days will not apply to these customers, as watering gardens and lawns is banned under Stage Four Water Restrictions.
