National Science Week, Australia’s biggest science and innovation festival is on again across the continent from August 14-22. Presently 304 students are studying science at the Gippsland Campus. During Open Day an estimated 300 people visited the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Engineering.

Three community seminars are being organised in the Faculty of Business and Economics to explore social responsibility. The first seminar on August 11 will explore corporate social responsibility from a global perspective. The second, on August 25, will be presented by Loy Yang Power and will present their strategy and approach to stakeholders and sustainability. And the final seminar on September 15, will be a radical and critical perspective of stakeholder theory in the context of indigenous versus national interest. The role of TV journalism in today’s society will be explored by Professor Simon Cottle, from the University of Melbourne at the HUMCASS Research Forum at Gippsland Campus on August 12 starting at 12:30 p.m.

The popular new Bachelor of Nursing and Rural Health double degree is going to be offered in Mildura. Staff from the Faculty of Nursing at Gippsland Campus are travelling to Mildura this week to launch the program.

Making the Grade

Students from Lowanna College took the top $500 prize in the GippsWeb04 competition. Jasmina Lazic and Nicole Cardona created the top Web site as announced at Open Day on July 31. Second prize of $300 went to Ben Watson and David McHenry from Newhaven College and third prize of $100 went to Lewis Rippon and Wesley Stevens from Bairnsdale Secondary College. The students worked on the Web sites either at home or at school, with the mentoring support of staff from the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology.

One hundred and eighty six people filled out Monash surveys at the Gippsland ‘Open Day’

On Saturday, July 31. One hundred and twelve people rated their experience as excellent, 71 said it was excellent and only two people rated the day as average or lower. The facultiesthat generated the largest amount of interest were education, nursing, arts, business and economics and science.

The ‘Free Lunchtime Concerts’ continue at Monash University Gippsland Campus on Monday, August 16 at 1pm in the Hexagon. The next concert, titled, ‘Tanned’ will feature a jazz ensemble featuring sultry singer Maria Barisic on vocals and Alvin Tan on drums.
