Young bands invited to battle it out at Live SiteLatrobe City is calling for expressions of interest from bands, to perform in the youth music night ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, taking place on Thursday 16 March 2006. By Latrobe City Council - 12th January 2006 - Back to News The ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, which is being hosted by Latrobe City Council and FReeZA, is part of the twelve-day festival of entertainment and culture taking place at the Commonwealth Games Regional Live Site, and is being staged at the Moe Racing Club.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that youth bands interested in performing in the ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition and future FReeZA music events throughout the year are currently being invited to register their ‘expressions of interest’ in participating.
"There are great prizes for participating bands up for grabs, including recording studio time, plus heaps more.
"There’s no restriction on the musical genre for bands entering the contest. Whether the band’s speciality is rock, pop, blues, hip hop or folk; or their instruments are electronic, brass, or string; all young people bands are welcome to express their interest in participating," Cr Price said.
Latrobe City’s events coordinator, Meaghan Jewson, said that bands interested in participating needed to complete some basic details on an ‘expression of interest form’ available from Latrobe City Service Centres, published in the Express, or on Council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
"Additional material also needs to be submitted with the ‘expression of interest form’ including a band biography with the names of all band members; and a history of the band including information such as how it was formed, how long the band has been together, and the reason for the band’s name," Ms Jewson said.
"Prospective bands also need to supply a demo tape, which will be judged by a FReeZA panel. This can be in the form of a tape, CD or MP3.
Additionally, prospective bands need to provide a list of proposed songs and the full lyrics for those songs. All proposed songs and lyrics will need to be approved in advance by the Panel," Ms Jewson added.
Cr Price said that the ‘Battle of the Bands’ provided an ideal opportunity for young people to play in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. "This will not just be an audience made up of those living in the Latrobe Valley, but visitors are likely to be coming to the Live Site from right across Gippsland.
"I’m quite sure that many gifted and artistic young people will find the ‘Battle of the Bands’ provides them with a springboard to show off their talents, and as a result many young people will gain from a great experience and make a name for themselves," Cr Price said.
"The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games is not just a massive sporting event. It is also a huge cultural experience where we can not only share the culture of many nations across the globe; but on a more local scale, can celebrate the diversity, talent and enthusiasm displayed by young people in our own community."
Expression of interest forms should be sent together with the required additional material to: Chris Larsen - Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264 Morwell 3840, or telephone 1300 367 700 for further information.
Entries must be received no later than Monday 30 January 2006.
