No Charge Hard Waste Drop Off WeekendLatrobe City Council’s transfer stations in Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Yinnar will be open with extended hours on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September to enable residents to dispose of their hard waste at no charge. By Latrobe City Council - 21st August 2009 - Back to News The no charge hard waste drop off weekend will allow residents to dispose of up to 2 cubic metres of hard waste per vehicle.
Latrobe City Manager Natural Environment Sustainability, Deirdre Griepsma, said council now provided two no charge hard waste weekends as part of the interim hard waste collection service.
"The no charge hard waste drop off weekend is in addition to the at call hard waste collection service, and the two no charge green waste drop off weekends offered in the 2009-2010 financial year.
"Residents with items such as household furniture, bed frames, mattresses, white goods and e-waste such as old TV’s, stereos or computers, can bring these items along to any one of our four transfer stations between 8am and 5pm on both days. Much of this material, including the white goods, e-waste and mattresses will be sent to recycling facilities," Ms Griepsma explained.
"Residents should note that these extended operating hours apply only for the weekend of the 5 and 6 of September 2009."
Ms Griepsma said that residents will also be able to deposit materials currently collected by the at call service as well as those accepted at the ‘Detox Your Home’ collection point in Morwell.
"These include paint, oil, barbeque gas bottles, car batteries, household batteries and fluorescent tubes.
"Items that will not be accepted include herbicides, pesticides, pool chlorine and solvents. These should be taken to the next ‘Detox Your Home’ mobile collection on Saturday 29 August 2009 between 1.30pm and 4.30pm at the Morwell Transfer Station.
"Along with asbestos and green waste, these materials will not be accepted during the no charge hard waste weekend. Special arrangements always need to be made for the disposal of any asbestos. If you need to make arrangements for asbestos disposal please contact Latrobe City on 1300 367 700.
"Green waste can only be disposed of through the fortnightly green waste collection, during the two no charge green waste weekends, or dropped off at the PineGro green waste recycling facilities," Ms Griepsma said.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said that over 1,500 vehicles attended the last no charge hard waste drop-off weekend in December 2008, and it is likely to be just as popular again.
"To avoid potential delays, especially at our Traralgon and Moe transfer stations, residents are advised to arrive early during the special opening hours with their loads."
"Residents who are not able to take advantage of the no charge hard waste drop off can still contact Latrobe City to arrange a booking for the next at call hard waste collection service to be conducted in early December 2009," Cr Price added.
This at call service is available for a fee of $20 (full) and $10 concession. Bookings and payment need to be made by Friday 13 November 2009 for this service. For further information, contact Latrobe City on 1300 367 700.
