Nominations Sought For City’s Australia Day Awards picture from www.picsearch.com Nominations are being sought from Latrobe citizens for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards. Latrobe City mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, called on the community to identify citizens who have made a particularly positive contribution to the community so that their work can be recognised.
"If you know someone who clearly has a strong community commitment, perhaps in caring for the environment, in sport, with the aged or children, or if you know of a group that has created an event that has enlivened and boosted community spirit, please nominate them for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards," Cr Lougheed said.
"These awards present us with the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and hard work that many people in our community are involved in. Often their work is unpaid and voluntary, yet it plays a vital role in the health, welfare and wellbeing of the community and it is important to recognise, and thank, these people and organisations for their efforts," Cr Lougheed said.
In 2008, the Australia Day Citizen of the Year award was presented to Carmen Cook, who received the award for her strong sense of community spirit and the vital role she has played in organising charitable events.
Jessica Tucker received the 2008 Young Citizen of the Year award for her volunteer work within two council programs.
The Community Event of the Year award in 2008 was presented to the 2007 Boolarra Folk Festival. The festival encapsulates the culturally diverse history of the Latrobe Valley and being a free event, it is totally inclusive.
Community Award of the Year went to Helimed 1 Auxiliary which was recognised for its assistance in funding the new functional complex at the Latrobe Regional Airport which included giving talks to the community and raising funding. The Make Moe Glow committee was also awarded the Community Award of the Year, for its steady flow of projects enhancing the cleanliness, tidiness and aesthetic appeal of Moe.
Nominations for the Australia Day 2009 awards are being invited for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and Community Award of the Year.
To be eligible for the ‘Citizen of the Year’ award, the person must live in Latrobe City and must be 25 years of age or older on 26 January 2009.
To be eligible for the ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ award, the person must live in Latrobe City and must be under 25 years of age on 26 January 2009.
The ‘Community Event of the Year’ award will be presented to the person or group that has staged the most outstanding community event in Latrobe City during the year.
The ‘Community Award of the Year’, will be presented to the person or group that has demonstrated outstanding community service in the local community during the year.
"If you know of any citizen, young or old, who deserves recognition of their service to the community, or if you would like to nominate a community event or organisation worthy of being recognised, please contact Latrobe City Council to obtain a nomination form," Cr Lougheed added.
Nomination forms for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards are available from Latrobe City’s service centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. Requests for nomination forms may also be made by telephoning 1300 367 700 or downloaded from the Latrobe City website on www.latrobe.vic.gov.au/australiaday. Nominations open Monday 15 September and will be received up until 5pm on Friday 31 October 2008.
