By Latrobe City Council - 2nd June 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley is a document that takes a visionary long-term approach to planning, to ensure Latrobe City and the region is well prepared to meet the future, through complementary policies and strategies.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that as the document name suggested, the strategy it incorporates is long-term and visionary, aimed at enhancing the many positive attributes of Latrobe City.

"As a council it could be very easy for us to fall into the trap of looking for short-term fixes to the many issues we encounter. Latrobe 2021 is about looking beyond short-term solutions, and putting in place key principles which will enable the long-term sustainability of Latrobe City," Cr Lougheed said.

"In commending this document, it’s important to thank the many people who contributed with input into Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley. We were overwhelmed by the level of cooperation we received in formulating the strategy," Cr Lougheed added.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley had been developed with input from across the community; from industry, various levels of government departments and government agencies and the community at large.

"It aims to guarantee the future provision of a safe environment for children; good schools; good public transport; secure, satisfying and fairly paid jobs; freedom from crime and violence; value for young people; a clean environment; respect for different lifestyles and care for the disadvantaged in Latrobe City," Mr Buckley said.

"Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley has been developed by the community. The results were determined through more than 1300 interviews with the public and affirmed by input from over 600 community groups, organisations, and state and federal government departments.

"An extensive consultation period involving public meetings and shopping centre information sessions in Traralgon, Morwell, Moe and Churchill were held to gauge the community’s response to Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley before it went to Council for adoption.

"A cooperative approach with the Department of Victorian Communities has resulted in the Department using the Latrobe 2021 process and template as a model for other councils to follow in establishing a strategic vision and framework," Mr Buckley said.

"Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley is already extremely influential in setting future strategic policy directions in Latrobe City.

"It establishes a broad resource allocation framework for the Annual Business Plan and Budget process. The document will also be formally reviewed every four years in order to ensure that high quality education, environment, transportation and employment services are available in Latrobe City, and an annual report card will also be issued to clearly demonstrate the progress of Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley in the provision of community services," Mr Buckley concluded.
