Latrobe Regional Gallery is delighted to announce that it will be the only venue in Victoria that will exhibit artworks from the prestigious 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the exhibition was a major coup for the gallery.

"Being the only Victorian venue to host this renowned exhibition is a real win for Latrobe City. Local residents will have the opportunity to study these outstanding works up close, and with the exhibition being such a huge draw card, we hope to attract visitors from further afield," Cr White added.

Latrobe City’s art director, Julie Adams, said that the Moran Prizes, based in Sydney and billed as Australia’s premier art and portrait competitions, include sections in contemporary photography, portraits and a special schools prize, exceed other competitions in number of entries and prize money.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to host this exhibition, which includes 35 paintings from the Portrait Prize. The portraits on show represent an incredible diversity of approach to subject and technique. I am sure visitors to the gallery will be amazed at the breadth of approach and skill on display," Ms Adams said.

Brisbane-based artist, Michael Zavros, was named the $150,000 winner of the 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize for his work titled, ‘Phoebe is Dead/McQueen’.

"Until I became a parent I didn’t fear death. Now, as I wait for sleep in the dark of night, I am visited by visions of my children befalling some tragedy and being taken from me. So now I do. This painting confronts the unthinkable as though the very act of painting it could somehow prevent it. Painted to exact life size in tiny precious detail, this is a personal memento mori. Here my ‘dead daughter’ is draped in my wife’s Alexander McQueen scarf. It is Phoebe’s favourite. Phoebe is my eldest daughter," Mr Zavros said.

Two Highly Commended prizes of $10,000 each were awarded to Robin Eley, for his work titled, ‘Self-portrait’ and Justin Cooper, for his work titled, ‘Blossom Cooper (Diptych)’.

The CEO of the Moran Arts Foundation, Mark Moran, said that amongst many artists and now significantly schools, the prizes are considered a leading cultural event with which to be involved.

"Over a million hits each month online on the Moran Prizes website confirms how the prizes and art, are being engaged with at a grass roots level across Australia," Mr Moran said.

The 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize will be on exhibition at the Latrobe Regional Gallery from Sunday 5 February to Sunday 3 April.
