The grants, presented by the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins,

have been made through the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s Round One festivals and Events program.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that in the Gallery’s case, the funding is for the photographic exhibition ‘Origini Hometowns of Italo-Australians’.

"Origini Hometowns of Italo-Australians is an exhibition currently being presented at the Latrobe Regional Gallery that evokes a strong sense of familiarity and place, even for those who have not been to Italy," Ms Tegart explained.

"The gentle lyrical photographs take the viewer on an unusual journey through the original hometowns of Italo-Australians; presenting quiet moments in the daily life and rituals of these towns, from the Veneto to Sicily," Ms Tegart said.

A highlight of the exhibition is a visit to the Latrobe Regional Gallery this Saturday 19 March at 2.30pm, by ‘Origini Hometowns of Italo-Australians’ artist Jane Burton-Taylor. Ms Burton-Taylor will talk about her exhibition and her travels in Italy followed by a performance of Italian folk singing. Admission is free.

Chair of the Festival Latrobe organising committee, Peter Ryan, said the Church Street Fiesta is the archetypal multicultural event and is being held this Friday 18 March from 4pm to 8pm.

"Once again the festival will be built around food, dancing, singing and entertainment, some of which will be provided by local ethnic and community groups. Special guest to delight the children will be Henry the Octopus from ‘The Wiggles’ who will bring his own underwater Big Band," Mr Ryan said.

In welcoming the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s funding, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said Cultural Diversity Week is a way to celebrate Australia’s cultural and religious diversity.

"This year, Victoria is marking the United Nations ‘International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination’ by celebrating what makes our state unique; our cultural diversity. Latrobe City welcomes this opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our own community which has been strengthened by the positive impact of so many settlers from other lands," Cr Lougheed said.

Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, said the Victorian State Government recognised the important contribution of diverse communities because it was these communities that had made Victoria the vibrant and harmonious state it is today.

"Our cultural diversity has, in many ways, set us apart from other states and placed us at the forefront of international relations. Today, Victoria is seen as a key destination for tourism, international investment and business development," Mr Jenkins said.

"These achievements could not have been possible without the valuable contributions of migrants from many cultural backgrounds," Mr Jenkins added.
