Farm chemical container collection coming to LatrobeThe Latrobe City farming community is being asked by council to support the next drumMUSTER collection, to be held in Morwell on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 May. By Latrobe City Council - 2nd May 2006 - Back to News The drumMUSTER program collects empty, cleaned, non-returnable plastic and metal farm chemical containers for recycling.
Latrobe City’s drumMUSTER collection centre will be located at the Morwell Transfer Station in Porters Rd, Morwell and will be open from 8am to 12 noon on both days. However, bookings are essential on 5133 6000 for disposals exceeding 15 containers.
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr. Lisa Price said the collection service was one of the most important environmental initiatives undertaken in the region.
"By adopting the drumMUSTER scheme, council is showing its commitment to our environment, while at the same time providing a valuable service for the rural community.
"The collection and recycling of these containers helps keep our farms, soil and environment safe from chemical contamination. I encourage all users of farm chemicals to make use of this service," Cr Price said.
Manager, DASMA Environmental Solutions, Neville Bond reminded farmers that the collection centre will only be open on the two designated days from 8am to 12 noon and that empty containers brought in must be correctly cleaned both inside and out and allowed to drain or air dry to ensure they contain no rinse water.
"Containers should be free from any visible chemical residue, clean and dry and have all lids removed. Metal containers should also be punctured at the base," Mr Bond advised.
"All containers delivered will be inspected to ensure they meet the Agsafe cleanliness standards. While containers with rust and dye stains will be accepted, dirty containers will not be accepted," Mr Bond said.
The national drumMUSTER scheme is funded by a levy on crop protection and animal health products sold in rigid steel and plastic non-returnable chemical containers. Chemical users pay the 4 cents per litre or kilogram levy at purchase.
The levy pays for participating local councils to establish collection centres and process the empty, cleaned containers brought in by farmers.
