Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that since the sister-city agreement was signed in March 2000, a regular program of contacts and visits by delegations had ensured the on-going strengthening of the relationship between the two cities.

"By hosting this Chinese Festival we can really highlight Latrobe City’s connection with Taizhou and bring to the people of Latrobe City some of the fabulous Chinese cultural elements that have become so recognisable across the world," Cr Lougheed said.

Latrobe City’s International Relations Officer, Yuki Poole, explained that the festival, to be held outside Stockland Traralgon, next to Café Evviva, would be very family friendly.

"Families and children can participate in a variety of Chinese activities including face painting, puppet making and tai chi workshops from 9.30am, and there will be a zodiac animal dress-up competition at 12.30pm," Ms Poole said.

"The highlight of the spectacle will be the dragon procession accompanied by a full entourage of lions, lion dancers and musicians. Dragons and lions are celebrated symbols in Chinese culture and the colourful and lively dragon dance has become a worldwide feature of Chinese festivities.

"The dragon procession starts at 10.30am outside the civic precinct in Kay Street and will wend its way towards Stockland Traralgon," Ms Poole added.

"This Festival will introduce an easily recognisable, extremely vibrant aspect of Chinese culture to Latrobe City and we hope that residents will enjoy the spectacle," Ms Poole concluded.
