Nominations For Latrobe City’s Australia Day Awards Invited Nominations are being invited for Latrobe City’s Australia Day community awards. The Awards will be presented on Australia Day 2008, and will recognise some of the outstanding individual and group By Latrobe City - 2nd November 2007 - Back to News contributions being made to the community.
The awards, as in previous years, comprise Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year. However, this year a new category has been announced – ‘Community Award of the Year’, which will be presented to a citizen or group who has performed outstanding community services in the local community.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, called on the community to nominate citizens and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the community so that their work can be recognised.
"If you know someone who has demonstrated strong community commitment in areas such as the environment, sport, the aged or children; or if you know a group that has created a great community event or someone who has provided outstanding community service, please nominate them for Latrobe City’s Australia Day awards," Cr Zimora said.
"The Australia Day awards present us with the opportunity to thank those who have put so much hard work into the community. Their work is usually unpaid and voluntary, yet it plays a significant role in the health, welfare and wellbeing of the community."
On Australia Day this year, the Citizen of the Year award was presented to Anna Fascio, who received the award for her dedicated commitment to the Latrobe City Italian community. Robert Bruzzese received the 2007 Young Citizen of the Year award for his work in the community as a mentor, excellent role model and outstanding achievements in soccer; and the Community Event of the Year was presented to the Twin City Archers Gippsland for the 59th National Archery Championships.
Nominations are being invited for the following Australian Day community awards in 2008:
Citizen of the Year recipients are people who have demonstrated through their hard work and dedication that they provide a significant contribution to the community in the current year or over a number of years. They also need to demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and/or are a role model for their community members or organisations; and excel in one of the areas of community service, in arts or culture, sport and recreation, business or the environment.
The Young Citizen of the Year recipient must be under 25 years of age or under on 26 January 2008; and is someone who either lives, works or attends an educational institution within the municipality; and has either made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or has given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.
The Community Event of the Year recognises a person or group which has staged a noteworthy community event within the municipality during the past year, while demonstrating that they are a community event and not a profit making venture.
The Community Service award for the Year is awarded to a resident or community group which has demonstrated that they have performed outstanding community service to the local community, either during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years. Nominated community groups must be able to demonstrate that they meet a community need or priority and have provided exceptional service to the community; that they are not-for-profit community based groups which consist of four or more members; and that they operate within the municipality.
