Latrobe Regional Airport: Fight to maintain REX service

Latrobe Regional Airport Chairman, Mr Richard Hancock, today expressed his disappointment at REX Airlines’ announcement that it intends cancelling its Sydney/Canberra/Latrobe Regional Airport service later this month.

"This is not the end; we will fight to maintain this excellent REX service to Sydney and Canberra," Mr Hancock vowed. "The REX service to Latrobe Regional Airport is the best interstate service we have had and by all accounts was doing well," Mr Hancock commented.

"I really believe that our service has become caught up in wider issues between REX and the Commonwealth Government over public service travel," Mr Hancock explained.

"Latrobe City Council and the Marketing Advisory Panel have consistently supported REX and its service to Latrobe Regional Airport for the benefit of the whole of Gippsland," Mr Hancock stated.

"On behalf of Council and the Airport Board, I urge the Commonwealth Government to take immediate action to remove the apparent obstacles to the Sydney/Canberra/Latrobe Regional Airport REX service," Mr Hancock said.

I have spoken to the Hon Peter McGauran, and he has undertaken to make urgent representations to the Federal Transport Minister on our behalf. Similar representations will be made to State and Commonwealth Ministers urgently," Mr Hancock said.
