East Gippsland Water’S Drinking Supplies Remain Safe For Customers

East Gippsland Water customers in flood affected areas, who are connected to a town water supply, can rest assured that their drinking water is perfectly safe to use.

Authority staff have pulled out all the stops over the past days to protect infrastructure such as pumping stations and water treatment works, to ensure no contamination of drinking water supplies from floodwaters sweeping through towns in the region.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Chief Executive Officer, Les Mathieson: "As we move from the flood protection to the recovery phase, I’m pleased to report that our water and wastewater services have continued to operate pretty much as normal throughout.

"There was a brief suspension in drinking water production from the Mitchell River, as the water treatment operation next to Woodglen Reservoir was halted for work safety reasons. However, the Mitchell River storages remained steady at some 37% full and the treatment operation is up and running again, successfully cleaning river water of significantly greater quantities of soil and bush fire debris now washing down the catchment.

"We are also continuing to truck-in drinking water to customers in Lindenow and Lindenow South, whose supplies have been temporarily disrupted by a broken water main, submerged under floodwater. We appreciate their patience and cooperation, and will endeavour to repair this main as quickly as possible.

"All residents and visitors to East Gippsland need to be aware that floodwaters may be polluted from a number of sources. They need to take sensible health precautions, which are being publicised by the Department of Human Services for example."

The 24 hour emergency number for East Gippsland Water customers to call to report a fault with their water supply is 1300 134 202. For other enquiries, please phone 1300 720 700.
