Young Musicians Sought For Youth Band

The Latrobe City Youth Band is currently seeking extra musicians to enable the band to play a greater range of music. There are now between six and eight places available for experienced young musicians who live in Latrobe City.

The band brings together young people from diverse backgrounds across the municipality with a common interest in music, and gives them the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their musical and personal skills through active participation in rehearsals, performances and structured lessons.

According to Band conductor, David Williams, the band has now matured to a point where it can broaden its base and offer all band members a greater level of experience.

"The band has reaped the benefits of performing at a wide variety of concerts since it was first formed in 2003. We have played overseas in China and Japan, at locations across Victoria such as Ballarat and Castlemaine, as well as throughout Latrobe City," David said.

"The band’s most recent performance was supporting Orchestra Victoria at Kernot Hall. Accolades flowed after this concert with many praising the exceptional talent of those in the band.

"In fact all our local major performances have received high praise. This band often features as the vanguard at Latrobe City Council functions such as Japanese Day and Australia Day. Our reputation is growing all the time and now is the time to look for additional musicians with particular expertise," David said.

Musicians with expertise with the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, euphonium and percussion are being asked to audition. Most Youth Band musicians are senior secondary school students or have commenced tertiary studies.

Currently the band has 24 members and has performances booked for Christmas Carols 2005, Australia Day 2006 and there are plans for an interstate tour early next year.

"Now is the chance for us to look wider and expand our horizons," David added.
