Community Input Wanted for Wellington Coast Subdivision Strategy

Future development and planning along the Ninety Mile Beach, from Paradise Beach to The Honeysuckles, is the subject of a Subdivision Strategy released today for public comment and feedback.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th October 2004 - Back to News

The draft Wellington Coast Subdivision Strategy has been developed by consultants GHD Pty Ltd on behalf of Wellington Shire Council, to explore the issue of inappropriate coastal subdivisions in the Ninety Mile Beach area, including on the smaller settlements of Seacombe and Hollands Landing. It considers how development can proceed in a sensitive manner to protect the area, which is an important recreation, tourism and environmental resource for Victoria.

The council is inviting affected landowners, residents and other interested community members to have their say on the draft.

There are approximately 11,800 privately owned residential lots affected – many with absentee owners. These lots are either not serviced with any form of infrastructure (including roads or power), or are partially serviced. The Council is looking at the best way to proceed with any future development in accordance with Government policies and in relation to environmental issues along this stretch of coast.

The draft report also investigates five development ‘scenarios’ looking at the costs and benefits of each in terms of environmental, community and economic factors as well as recommending a preferred option.

GHD is managing the community consultation process on behalf of the council, with a number of activities planned for the coming months. All issues, comments and feedback in relation to the Strategy will be documented.

Said Wellington’s Director of Community and Economic Development, Steven Dickson: "Resolving the issue of inappropriate coastal subdivisions is particularly important to the council, which is why we are very keen to receive input from the community in relation to the Strategy. It will shape the Ninety Mile Beach area’s future development.

"We encourage the community to give us their views, so that everyone can have their ideas and opinions heard before the final decision is made on the preferred settlement option and how it will be implemented."

The council will consider its preferred options in relation to the GHD report at the conclusion of the community consultation process, to ensure that all community feedback is fully considered before a final decision is made.

Further details about the consultation activities, times and dates will be announced shortly, but for more information about the Strategy please contact Sophie Walker at GHD on 1800 68 69 79 or email wellingtoncoast@ghd.com.au
