Latrobe City recognised for putting on a top Australia DayIn a ceremony held at Latrobe City headquarters in Morwell last week, Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price accepted the award for ‘Best Australia Day Program in a Rural or Suburban Area’ on behalf of the city. By Latrobe City Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that council was pleasantly surprised with receiving the award for the second year in a row.
"It’s fantastic to receive such a highly acclaimed award, not just once, but for two consecutive years. Latrobe City supports Australia Day activities throughout the municipality by sponsoring community celebrations, events and civic functions with the aim of lifting the profile of Australia Day within the community," Cr Lisa Price said.
The award committee looks at good planning and innovative thinking in creating programs for the entire community’s enjoyment. The committee was reportedly particularly impressed by Latrobe City’s many locations that offered free Australia Day events which catered for all ages and families.
The committee also considers whether events are effective at engaging the community, and in Latrobe City’s case awarded the trophy for variety, excellence and inclusiveness.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that she was thrilled to be accepting the award on behalf of the whole community.
"It needs to be recognised that this is not an award to Council, but an award presented to our entire community. It is the whole Latrobe City community that should take pride in receiving such an honour," Cr Lisa Price said.
"Latrobe City is proud to support Australia Day so that residents have plenty of opportunity to wave the flag on a day where the nation celebrates what is great about Australia and being Australian.
"We had more than 7,300 people attend community breakfasts, flag raising ceremonies and other events around the region. As well as these activities, Latrobe City opened its outdoor pools free of charge which was welcomed on a 40 degree day," explained Cr Lisa Price.
"Another new initiative at our Australia Day this year was the inclusion of two Australia Day ambassadors – Stefan Romaniw OAM and Adam Smith. Both of these ambassadors came from different backgrounds, Adam is a young ‘Social Entrepreneur’, having diverse experience working with young people and communities in Australia, the United States, and South East Asia. Stefan Romaniw OAM has experience as chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and as vice president of the Ukrainian World Congress.
"These two ambassadors enhanced our Australia Day program and gave fully of themselves. Stefan spoke at the Australia Day breakfast at Traralgon, and Adam at the Gippsland Heritage Park in Moe. They also joined us for lunch, and then became part of our civic function and Australia Day award ceremony at Kernot Hall, sharing their motivational experience with us and assisting with our award presentations.
"Latrobe City residents had plenty of opportunity to wave the flag on Australia day, to receive this trophy is a fine accolade for all the hard work, dedication and effort put in by staff, community groups and businesses around the municipality," Cr Lisa Price concluded.
