By Latrobe Local News - 5th May 2003 - Back to News A spectacular aerial display and precision parachute jump will signal the start of the Australian Innovation Festival’s first offshoot into regional Victoria.
Federal Minister for Science, the Honourable Peter McGauran, will launch the Latrobe Innovation Festival – an official arm of the Australia Innovation Festival – on Monday May 5. The festival will highlight innovation in Latrobe, which is home to Australia’s only aeroplane manufacturer, Gippsland Aeronautics, and National Precision Jumping Champion Janine Hayes.
The festival will feature a keynote address from one of Gippsland’s most famous sons, Baker Medical Research Institute brain research expert Professor Geoffrey Head, who will talk about innovation in medical science and innovating in a regional context. Prof. Head is a Gippsland Development Ambassador.
The festival will also showcase 25 examples of innovation in business, community, the arts and tourism – from promoting Gippsland’s heated lakes for sailing holidays, to football for people with disabilities and the launch of an Italian Chamber of Commerce in Latrobe to maximise international business opportunities.
Chairperson of the Marketing Advisory Panel and Latrobe City CEO, Richard Hancock, said the festival would demonstrate the value of research, development and partnerships that benefit the region.
"People are the Latrobe Valley’s greatest resource and the festival is about helping people in business, community and the arts identify and capitalise on good ideas," Mr Hancock said.
Latrobe is the first Victorian region to officially link with the National Festival which has over 300 participating events. Funding for the festival is being supplied through the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce Marketing Advisory Panel.
Mr Hancock said that the Latrobe Innovation Festival would be a celebration of innovation within the region.
"Due to the terrific response to the concept within the region, the Latrobe Innovation Festival already represents over a third of the events registered in Victoria," Mr Hancock said.
"The high level of local interest demonstrates Latrobe’s leadership position in regional Victoria when it comes to innovation, dynamism and a forward-thinking approach to business and community development."
Latrobe Innovation Festival events will run from May 2-22. Events include: the Federation Health Gippsland Business Awards, Arts Innovation Week, Latrobe Business Arts Forum, Creative Gippsland – Cultural Tourism Forums, Football for people with disabilities, Good Access Good Business, Phillip Island & Gippsland Discovery Tourism Awards, Small Business ‘one on one’ Graduation, Innovation in Community Safety Promotion Forum, Sailability Gippsland Open Day, Fabric and Faith, and the Italian Desk Launch.
