Volunteers who are nursing sick and injured koalas back to good health have received some extra help with a $4000 federal government grant. Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said 'Koalas of Raymond Island Inc' would use the funding to assist its life-saving work with the local koala population. "A small but dedicated team of volunteers are doing amazing work to care for koalas at the island's only shelter for sick and injured animals."

Shelter's impressive impact

Mr Chester said, "The volunteers are reliant on grants and donations to run the shelter and every time I visit I am impressed by their work. Without volunteers, the shelter wouldn't exist and the 24 hour care they provide for wildlife would be lost from our community."

In addition to the voluntary rescue service for koalas, the team trains locals on how to care for local wildlife and conducts information sessions for visitors and students exploring the island's koala trail," he said. Mr Chester said the grant funding would support the purchase of specialised animal rescue equipment and first aid kits for volunteers.
