New Tourist Golf Packages in full swing

A new and exciting golf package for tourists has been initiated by Latrobe City Council, which is set to draw many golfing enthusiasts to the region.

By Latrobe City Council - 31st October 2003 - Back to News

The golf package is the first in a series of packages to be promoted as part of a tourism campaign funded by Latrobe City and the Federal Government’s Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) program.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that a sub-committee comprising all golfing operators in Latrobe City and surrounding areas, have united with Council to create the innovative package which will be promoted through an extensive marketing campaign.

"We have some fantastic golfing facilities on offer here in Latrobe so we look forward to working together with the local tourism operators for the benefit of the whole region. The involvement and commitment of the golf clubs has been excellent and this is a great example of what can be achieved when we all work together," Cr Middlemiss said.

"There is significant potential in the golf market for this region. We have eight quality golf courses within 30 minutes or so of each other, our green fees and other tourist facilities and attractions are extremely competitive with other regions, and we are only one hour from the outskirts of Melbourne," Cr Middlemiss added.

Latrobe City’s Co-ordinator, Tourism Development said that other packages in the campaign will be marketed under the themes of indulgence, adventure and gourmet produce.

"As part of the campaign, 90 television commercials are set to be aired to advertise hot deals which will be created by the individual tourist operators. They will be used in conjunction with a series of brochures highlighting the themed packages," Ms Toppin explained.

"The tourism campaign is fully underway, with the packages being advertised on the Prime Holidays website. The marketing and advertising campaign is free to the operators and we are offering to teach them how to create a package that will help to successfully market their business," Ms Toppin said.

Ms Toppin added that in order to help the region’s tourism operators to create professional packages themselves, Latrobe City had recently organised a series of workshops.

"So far 70 tourism operators have attended one of three workshops which were held in early September. The workshops taught operators how to price their product and build a suitable package to promote their business. The aim of holding such seminars is to educate the local tourist operators so that they themselves can create a professional product to sell, and as a result, boost tourism to the area," Ms Toppin concluded.

The full implementation of all the tourist packages in the campaign is due to be completed by March 2004.
