Water Testing Work Drying Up

Latrobe City Council’s health services officers will this week scale back tank water testing services due to the rapid decline in the number of residents seeking their services.

By Latrobe City - 26th March 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s, coordinator health services, Andrew Mackintosh, said that the drop in demand was evidence of the considerable effort made by health services officers in getting to fire affected properties.

"There have been over 400 water tanks and some 700 sewerage systems inspected over the past three weeks.

"We’re pleased that the demand for this service is in decline, as it provides evidence that the community is moving forward with its recovery," Mr Mackintosh said.

Mr Mackintosh said that residents who had not as yet taken the opportunity to test the quality of their tank water could still do so.

"Residents wishing to have their tank water tested can still collect a sample bottle from any recovery centre and return it for analysis on Wednesdays.

"Residents need to deposit their sample at the recovery centre no later than 12.30pm on Wednesdays.

"When taking a sample of water from the tank, it is important that residents allow the water to run for approximately one minute before taking a sample," Mr Mackintosh said.

"It is also important that residents include their name, address, phone number and date and time on the sample. This assists us in providing information back on the sample.

"The sample should be stored in the refrigerator until it can be taken to a recovery centre at Boolarra, Churchill, Traralgon or Traralgon South.

"Finally, the water sample must be collected and dropped off on the same day."

Mr Mackintosh said that it would be approximately five days before residents received their test results.

"While waiting for the all clear, residents should continue to exercise precaution and it is recommended that water is boiled for three minutes prior to consumption.

"A simple fact sheet has been developed detailing these procedures. Fact sheets are available either on the Latrobe City website at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au or at the recovery centres.

"Residents can also telephone the health services team on 1300 376 700."
