Hundreds Of Trees Planted At Saltwater CreekCommunity members helped plant 500 trees over two sites along the banks of Saltwater Creek in Ventnor to celebrate National Tree Day on 27 July 2014.
By Bass Coast - 13th August 2014 - Back to News Twenty-three people, including members of Saltwater Creek Coastcare and Phillip Island Conservation Society, attended the tree planting day.
Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Neil Rankine, said across the sites a mix of trees, shrubs, grasses and creepers were planted, all of which are indigenous to the area and will grow in the local conditions.
"Saltwater Creek was chosen as a National Tree Day site as it is an important natural reserve on Phillip Island which acts as a biodiversity corridor between Cowes and Ventnor," Cr Rankine said.
"With the recently former Saltwater Creek Coastcare group this area can know receive the attention it deserves."
One of the areas planted was a site which the Phillip Island Conservation Society had previously received a grant from Coastcare to remove Box Thorn and regenerate the area.
"Box Thorn is nasty noxious weed which has large thorns along the branches," Cr Rankine said.
"It provides habitat for pests such as rabbits and foxes while interfering with seabird breeding habitat and competing with native shrubs."
The project to revegerate the area will continue into 2015 with Council assisting Phillip Island Conservation Society in co-ordinating ongoing weed removal and replant.
The Phillip Island Conservation Society deemed the day a great success with good weather, and thanked everyone who came out to lend a hand.
