Fight to continue for Monash engineering says MayorLatrobe City’s Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss has said representations will continue to be made over the retention of the School of Engineering and a range of mainstream Engineering Courses at the Monash Gippsland Campus. By Latrobe City Council - 6th June 2003 - Back to News Cr Middlemiss and a number of stakeholders met with the State Minister for Education, the Hon Lynne Kosky on Tuesday evening to discuss proposals currently pursued by the University.
"The Minister said she has raised our concerns with Monash, but advised that Monash had not changed its position, and that she has no real authority in this issue beyond persuasion. While we accept this is the case we have asked that she lobby her Federal counterpart on this issue," Cr Middlemiss said.
"At our meeting with the Minister we raised a number of issues, such as the Course Entry Score and the history of the School of Engineering. The Minister was unaware of some of the details relating to these issues and asked us for additional information.
"The Minister also agreed to accept further written submissions from Latrobe City on this matter," Cr Middlemiss said.
Cr Middlemiss said the stakeholders had asked him to convene a further meeting of stakeholders next Tuesday. "I’m certainly happy to do so and will welcome other stakeholder groups sending representatives," Cr Middlemiss said.
"The stakeholders are determined to continue the push to retain the Engineering’s School Course relevant to Gippsland needs. The next step will be to seek a meeting with Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson, where we can further our case," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
