The Coronet Bay community came out to celebrate the official opening of the new temporary boat ramp on Saturday, 25 February.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman said the launch was a significant day for many Coronet Bay community members who had been involved in this project from the very beginning.

"The event marks the completion of the installation of the ‘fleximat’ concrete block boat ramp surface and gravel car park. The project started in 2008 following the closure of the township’s previous boat ramp. I’m pleased that once again we are able to provide this access to Western Port Bay for residents of Coronet Bay and the fishing community."

In her speech, Cr Dowman said that it had been a hard and long journey to get to this point.

"The community leaders who must be acknowledged for being the driving force to secure our boat ramp include: Barry and Christine Hutton,Tim Ealey and Frank Hance, Vlad Pucovsky, John Reeve, and Coronet Bay community groups who put their full support behind their leaders to achieve their goal – a public boat ramp available for all to use", said Cr Dowman.

Barry Hutton, from Coronet Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, was part of the formal proceedings and spoke about the importance of having boating access to Western Port to the social lives of many in the township.

Even with the soaring heat the crowd enjoyed refreshments and were pleased to finally mark the end of what had been a complex but worthwhile process.

Bass Coast Shire Council Director of Planning and Environment, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said there had been several steps for Council and the community to go through to establish the best place for a new boat ramp at Coronet Bay.

"Council coordinated feasibility studies and scientific research to determine the impact a boat ramp would have on flora and fauna. Based on this information we chose the kind of ramp suitable for this RAMSAR protected site and then needed to apply for approvals from various departments and agencies. Throughout this process, Council kept the community involved," explained Ms Duncan-Jones.

"We still need to create a landscape plan for the area around the ramp, so we will continue our discussions with the community to get the best outcome for this as well. The plan will include environmental weed control, planting indigenous vegetation, public seating, improvements to the car park and other facilities to assist the launch and retrieval of vessels, " said Ms Duncan-Jones.
