Latrobe Valley Schools Audited For Maintenance Action

Three government schools in the Latrobe Valley will undergo a full maintenance audit as the first step in reversing a decade of Labor government neglect, Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe announced today.

Auditors will visit all 1550 Victorian government schools over the next six months to gain a comprehensive picture of the current state of their facilities.

Mr Northe said the Condition Assessment Audit was needed following 11 years of school maintenance neglect by the previous Labor government and would be used to prioritise much-needed repairs.

"As part of this process, Victorian government schools will share in additional funding to carry out maintenance work," he said.

"The audit is part of a $100 million Victorian Coalition Government boost to school maintenance funding."

Mr Northe said initial estimates showed at least $1.34 million was required for maintenance repairs in Latrobe Valley government schools.

He said the preliminary figure only covered those schools included in the current audit of 492 schools.

"This figure includes $5895.98 in maintenance works required at Toongabbie Primary School, $673,670.28 required at Kurnai College, and $667,794.72 required at Traralgon College.

Education Minister Martin Dixon said recent media coverage of the long-standing state of disrepair of many Victorian schools showed that under Labor schools were allowed to rot.

"The Coalition Government’s maintenance funding boost will reverse Labor’s cuts to maintenance funding, which dropped from $73 million in 2000-01 to just $59 million in 2009-10, a 20 per cent cut over 10 years," Mr Dixon said.

The audit will assess the condition of all rooms in schools, outbuildings and covered walkways and will enable maintenance funding to be targeted to urgent projects and provide principals with the information they need to better direct their annual maintenance funding.

"The task of overcoming a decade of neglect is massive, however, this government’s commitment of additional maintenance funding will enable schools to start making inroads into their maintenance backlog," Mr Dixon said.

The Condition Assessment Audit is expected to be finalised by May next year.
