Community Involvement In Forest Management

The area of State forest that borders the township of Rawson in the hills north of Traralgon is a popular area for walking, horse riding, motorbike riding, school walks and mountain bike riding.

Locals, tourists and tourism businesses all use the area for a variety of different activities.

The local community at Rawson is now helping to manage this area of State forest, with neighbouring residents having a say in how management can be improved so everyone can enjoy the local bush environment.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), in partnership with the Rawson Police and members of the local community have formed the Rawson Community Forest Project. Funding assistance has been received from DSE's Tall Forest Project, which aims to work with the communities and other agencies to better manage natural resources in State forest.

Peter West, Senior Forester at Erica said that residents had concerns that with the growing use of the area there was a possibility of an accident occurring with horses, motorbike riders or walkers. Track conditions and lack of signs were also raised.

"The first public meeting was attended by thirty people, who were encouraged to come up with ideas for management options," Mr West said.

"After a number of similar meetings, it was decided that a voluntary motorbike free zone should be trialed. A small committee from the community was established to help implement the improvements to the forest."

"The success of the trial voluntary motorbike free zone will be determined by the community - they came up with the ideas and they will assess the outcomes," Mr West said.

Progress to date on the Rawson Community Forest includes the establishment of the trial voluntary motorbike free zone and the building of an information board that includes a forest etiquette code for all users. Blackberry spraying and road repairs on Happy Jack Track have been undertaken along with maintenance along the Old Steel Bridge Walking Track. Many of the tracks in the area are now sign posted.

Another public meeting will be held in June to determine the success of the trial and discuss other ideas to improve forest management of the area. For details please contact Peter West on 51 652253.
